Bummer. I can understand your frustration.
I think I get the same error you're describing -- a USB symbol in the 
system tray and a message saying an unidentified USB device isn't 
working. The symbol and the message go away when I remove the Treo from 
the cradle is how I know that's the erroneous device.
Sorry the reboot doesn't help. I hope you don't have a more serious 
problem. Do you have another USB cable -- maybe someone you're with also 
uses a Palm? If you're using a cradle, try removing the cradle from the 
cable and plugging the cable directly into the Treo.
Otherwise, I'm out of ideas. I hope someone else has some for you.
