In order - yes and yes.
Each hotsync, the software overwrites the backup with the new old stuff,
and makes the new stuff the latest stuff. That's why she said rename the
.dat to .old before naming the bak. to dat -- just in case something
went awry and you had to revert.
Now that it's succeeded, you should be all set.
As for syncing the new 755 -- when you renamed those files, they became
the working information. When you hotsync'd the virgin 755, hotsync put
in it the only information it had -- the stuff in the .dat files from
the desktop.
