If the handheld is freshly hard reset, then the desktop will overwrite the handheld (make a copy of the .dat file before HotSyncing, just in case!). If it's not freshly hard reset (i.e., if he's done ANYTHING, even made a phone call), set the HotSync conduits to "Desktop overwrites handheld."
The new .bak file will automatically be created.
