Make that for me a raw, unbiding, philosophical loathing of Microsoft in
general. An invorrigible techno-toy junkiy, I refrained from the first
Siemens smartphone because it would have force me to use Outlook, an
application I had tried and hated. I have used other parts of Microsoft
Office because I had to get along with clients. I'm currently on Office
2003; I don't remember the requirement that made me upgrade, but I
remember being wicked upset when Microsoft decided all my knowledge of
WordBasic macro writing was done away with.
I tell that to tell this -- last night, I allowed Microsoft to
install a Very Important Security Update. When it was over, I had no
Internet access. There was a warning that I might need to restart
Windows at the end of the installation process, but not that it was
about to turn ZoneAlarm into a brick wall between me and the Internet.
Fortunately, I am on a list that deal with such stuff and remembered
already downloading an email that refered to a similar occurence with
other non-MS firewalls.
It now appears that Apple may be headed in the same direction with
its iPhone. As cool as the device is, there's just something wrong about
one company having that much control over my choice of tools.
I wonder whether there will be an 800P.
