You've got a good point.  Maybe it would improve.  Especially since there 
wouldn't be any unions!

I just picture what I saw when I worked at NASA where some people (civil 
servants) sat around and read the newspaper all day and didn't get reprimanded.

Why do you say that?  In most developed countries where the government
runs (or *tightly* regulates) the airline(s), they deliver much better
service than we get here in the US.  Look at the performance of
Lufthansa, KLM, Singapore Airlines, and El Al and you'll see generally
better results than our deregulated system.  I'm not for the
government controlling everything, but it makes you wonder why our
approach hasn't worked out so well.
