It stays in receive mode unless you log out in Messaging:Prefs

I usually hold it in one hand with the back of the Pre resting in my
fingers and push my thumb into the middle of the screen and slide
up...that will open it 95% of the time. It's very fast and I love
that "snikt" sound* I had qualms about it at first, but it seems to
have no negative side-effects and I've been opening it that way for
over 4 months now.
