All,
As promised, here's the summary of your feedback on webOS that I sent
to Palm. Note that asterisks are meant to indicate particularly
popular issues and that it's a mix of verbatim text and my
synthesis/condensing of similar points.
======== SOFTWARE =========
*** MORE RESPONSIVE!!! LESS LAGGY!!! {OS} ******+ [#1 complaint by far]
CALENDAR [lots of complaints & grousing about how it's not even as
usable/useful as basic Palm OS Calendar was]
- Invite/add event attendees (and have them show up on Exchange)
- Show anniversaries and birthdays (from Contacts fields);
configurable per contact (not all bdays should show up in Calendar)
with reminders N days prior *
- Quicker delete of events (Currently it takes 4 clicks)
- Quicker editing of events (e.g., in place in the calendar grid -
text and time. I shouldn't have to open the calendar entry to do
that).
- A default reminder alarm for the scheduled start time (currently the
closest to this is '5 minutes prior').
- Ability to set the reminder in minutes, hours AND days. I need to
set an event for an assignment deadline, and have it start reminding
me several days before it's actually due.
- If event has a reminder alarm set, an alarm bell icon should be
displayed in the event name in the calendar day view. (Currently there
is no indication that an alarm is set unless you open the event.)
- Finite duration option on alarms ("Had an alarm go off this morning
in my pocket whilst I was driving - you have no idea how annoying it
is not being able to stop driving to dismiss it!")
EMAIL
- Threaded conversations (a la Gmail)! **
- The formatting of picture in email. The whole picture is not viewed.
It gets cut. Text is fine in mail.
- Should be an option: When you delete an email, it should open up
the next email (as opposed to taking you back to the list)
- Group email addressing capability (be able to group multiple email
addresses and save as a single contact) *
- Ability to play wav voicemail files in email
- Ability to "watch" additional folders in the email app. Right now
it will only automatically fetch new mail for the INBOX of each
account; I'd like it to automatically show me new mail in subfolders
as well.
- A "delete permanently" option in email. My default action is for
delete to move messages to a Trash folder, but I prefer to permanently
delete some to save space. I can't do that today.
- When syncing to Gmail, would like to have swiping the message off
the screen in one direction "archives" the message and swiping it in
the other direction sends it to trash. Right now, prefs let me only
do one or the other.
- Keyboard-based email control shortcuts (like on Blackberry)
- Progress bar while downloading email. Currently, you don't know when
it's finished. (Something more accurate than the rotating number icon
that only indicates syncing is occurring)
- When deleting messages, ability to "delete from server" for
individual messages, as on the Treo 700p.
- Ability to sort email descending vs. ascending for various columns
(date, subject, etc).
- When multiple image files are attached to email, ability to view
them sequentially by tapping "NEXT", right arrow, or something
similar, without having to swipe back to the message to open each one
separately.
- Ability to "Save All" attachments, including image files, from an
email message.
LAUNCHER
- Generally, there's a lot of frustration w/ lack of customization of
the launcher screens & Wave launcher: "Certainly >4 launcher pages,
or better yet maybe no pages at all, but a large seemless area one can
swipe around (like Android)?" ****
- Option to scroll launcher pages horizontally instead of vertically.
- Make launcher icons a bit smaller, so 12 show totally on the
launcher screen...currently the ones closest to the launch bar are cut
in half.
- More than 4 apps on the quick launch ribbon.
- Faster access to frequently used apps (>4)
- A task manager (a la JSTop)
- Fill screen with open cards (a grid, not single row)
AGENDA/TODAY VIEW (Suggested by several) ***
- A today screen or agenda screen that can always be visible if desired.
- Press-n-hold on the button (Pre; glowing line on other devices) to
bring up an agenda overlay - or at least the next couple of
appointments - and it disappears when you let go of the button
Full Documents to Go (document creation & editing, not just reading) ***
SOUND
- More/better control over alarms, alerts and other sounds. Mimicking
the control I had on the Treo would be nice. Doing Profiles like the
BB would be better.
- Add much more granular controls for sound. I want options to change
alert sounds for everything that currently makes some kind of sound
(well, maybe not within 3rd party apps, except when those apps use
notification services) **
CONTACTS
- Anniversary field in contacts (shows up in Calendar) **
- Allow the picture field in Outlook contacts to sync with the contact
picture in the Pre. (Currently wegOS does not support syncing contact
photos, so Outlook contact photos do not transfer to the Pre
contacts.)
SMS/IM
- The ability to save lists for group texting and emailing
- Ability to purge old txt messages (e.g., all, older than 1wk, etc.)
- Allow picture messages to be sent when in wi-fi mode.
- Broader IM integration ("Most crappy phones have at least the big
boys now: AIM, yahoo, google, msn, icq, myspace, facebook")
- Windows Live Messenger support
GENERAL
- Assignable keyboard keys (hold to launch apps, go to specific
websites, etc....like Palm OS did) **
- Wide virtual scroll bar that autohides when not needed **
- Allow for services to keep running even when the phone is locked
(screen is off). In particular, GPS.
- Better cut/copy/paste * (lots of frustration over placing and moving
the cursor w/r/t precision)
- On-screen keyboard (portrait and landscape) **
- Proxy support for WiFi and cellular data connections
- Ability to select multiple items (email messages, photos, etc.) and
perform actions on them, such as delete, move to specific folder, or
(as in email) to be able to empty a folder. **
- Landscape view for all apps (esp. email & PDF viewer) ***
- Universal Search should search all apps and all fields (e.g., not
just name & phone in Contacts); search strings that begin w/ numbers
(currently cannot do in Memos & Tasks) **
- Ability to jump to "top of page" or "end of page" in emails, web
pages, and when viewing long list of records (e.g., inbox, or memos).
*
- Ability to control the brightness when it's turned off but on the
Touchstone (darker at night, brighter during the day; configurable;
maybe widgets to add stuff other than the clock and alerts!). *
- Microphone support in the SDK
- Global quicktext with emoticons too
- Ability to lock orientation (such as for reading when lying on side)
- Ability to send to printer directly from Pre
COMPATIBILITY
- Support for more audio and video codecs and formats, especially
Audible.com format
- WMV & PPS file support
BROWSER
- Optional "mobile reader" view, where the page is formatted so
content auto-word-wraps to fit the screen (no pinching/zooming
needed). "Android and Blackberry have this."
PHONE
- International dialing (e.g., how to handle +)
- Fix problem with the dialer where it mixes people up when called,
and in the call log. If I have two people with the same phone number
but different extensions, it seems to randomly pick one of them to
display, without regard for who I actually called, and it loses the
extension information so I can't tell in the Call Log who I actually
called! *
CAMERA
- Self-timer for the camera.
- Resolution options: VGA, 1024x768, 1600x1200, & Full (3MP)
- Quality (compression) & sharpening options: Low / Med / Hi
OTHER/NEW
- Audio/voice recording (to standard format, saved in storage area) **
- Voice recognition *
- Text-to-speech
- Visual voicemail
- XM/Sirius Radio app
- Shazaam app
- Decent Facebook app
MUSIC
- Equalizer
PATCHES
- Add most of the patches (or at least similar ones with options for
them to be turned on/off - configurability out of the box is not very
good)
- Patches I find useful are:
...4x4 icons v3
...Brightness in Device Menu
...Call Duration in Call Log
...Call History During Call
...Enable add/delete pages
...Enable landscape email *
...Enable landscape PDF viewer *
...Flashlight in device menu
...Improved filename format
...Mimic Outlook formatting on Email Replies
...No auto refresh after idle *
...Repeat Reminder Notifies
...Reset options on power button hold
...Reset to first page
...Timestamp - builtin
...Wrap location field
======== HARDWARE ========
*** MORE RESPONSIVE!!! LESS LAGGY!!! {change processor speed? RAM?}
**** [#1 complaint by far]
Macro mode on the camera *
External/Removable storage *
A dedicated scroll key (or something) on the keyboard *
LED notifications *
Increased RAM ("for more speed and better handling of multiple cards -
we've seen this with the Pre Plus")
Increased internal storage
Digital compass
More buttons (for creating hotkeys to do things or start apps without
all the swiping)
Slightly larger and/or higher res screen - at least as one model
option (to compete with the larger Android & iPhone screens)
Rotatable physical keyboard so it can be used when screen is in both
portrait and landscape modes
Better battery life
Finally fix the Touchstone problem where the phone cycles through
charging/not charging every few seconds
BLUETOOTH:
- Better range: "If I leave my Plantronics Discovery 665 in one room
and walk to another with the phone, I too often have to manually get
into bluetooth and tell it to reconnect. It does, but it should happen
automatically, or not lose connection in the first place."
- "Auto-recognize and connect to available Bluetooth. I have three
Bluetooths (blueteeth?) - a Plantronics 655, Plantronics 655, and a
Super BlueAnt. I would like two things:
1) for the Pre to recognize and reconnect after being out of range,
2) is related - auto-connect to whichever of the units it detects,
of the ones to which it is paired. For instance, one of the
Plantronics runs out of battery, and I swap units. It should
auto-connect to the new one. Or I turn off the Plantronics and turn on
the BlueAnt (visor-mounted); it should detect the swap and
auto-connect." (Others said their webOS devices already do this; may
be a user-specific issue)
