Sam, those may be wacky, but I like them! I had once suggested here that the email app should display how many unread messages are in my unified Inbox, so I think we're on the same page.
So, yes, dynamic icons would be a good step in the right direction. Using full-blown widgets like Android does, however, is yet another step.
