I was going to ask a similar question...is it possible to buy a used Pre (i.e. off eBay), and only use it in airplane mode, with WiFi? (Kinda' like an iPod Touch.) My 10 year old wants an iPod Touch for his birthday, but instead, I was thinking of getting him a Pre to use via WiFi for now. (He also likes my Pre...but we aren't willing yet to add another line and data plan each month.)
I know that WiFi works in airplane mode...my uncertainty is whether it first needs to be set up with a carrier. On initial bootup, it prompts to set up a Palm Profile first. I'm just not sure if since the device isn't connected to a network, it won't let you go any further to set up the phone. Is it possible to cancel the Palm Profile sign in, until it boots up and I turn WiFi on? Then set up the Palm Profile? Thanks. I got a replacement Pre, and activated it, and now I realize that I need to access certain apps on the old de-activated phone so I can export their databases. But whenever I turn on the phone it reboots itself and wants me to create a Palm Profile. Of course, it can't do that with no service, and it won't let me get past that.
