As far as I understand, installing a 3.4 kernel solves the resolution  
problem. After adding Jxself's repository, such a kernel can be installed  
from the package manager: https://jxself.org/linux-libre/

But, yes, AMD is a terrible choice when it comes to picking a video card.  
Pre-Skylake Intel graphical chipsets are the best options.
