The best check for the GPU is to see how well some games you like to play run. For 3-D games, in particular, a lack of hardware acceleration tends to cause markedly reduced performance, often to the point where the game is practically unplayable. 2-D games are typically not noticeably affected, although sometimes they are (it depends on how complex of a graphics engine the game uses).
It means some games and desktop environments may not perform very well, or
may even perform quite poorly. It may also mean a slight performance
reduction in general (you see it as a sort of choppiness when doing things
like dragging windows around and scrolling through Web pages).
