It's always helpful to know these things when giving advice to someone new when things get stressful.
Magic Banana is, of course, absolutely correct about doing the job right so that you don't have to rerun Grub. Being able to boot from external hard drives is such a nice perk, I just wanted to point that out to you but my timing was a bit off.
