'dead to sin' in romans is the eschatological prerequisite to 'confessing'--two parts to that (eternal) life:  1)confessing JC himself as in his teaching: 'if you confess Me.."  2)in Christ, confessing our sin/s which is possible only if you/we are 'dead to sin'
