David wrote: The Bible is not what Jesus promised would guide us into all truth. The Holy Spirit is the promised teacher, counselor, comforter, advocate, and the one that will guide us into all truth. The Bible certainly has functioned in the lives of many of us to bring us to truth, but ultimately the Bible points us to the Holy Spirit which is the true promise of Christ. We are to receive the Living Word not the Written Word. Our lives should be focused upon the Spirit rather than the Letter. Use the Letter for correction and instruction, and in all matters pertaining to sound doctrine, but let our lives be focused upon the Spirit of Christ that we may live and walk in the Spirit.
Blaine: Well said, David. Your commentary is truly a thing of beauty--In fact, I have seldom seen it worded so nicely. (:>) But hope you don't mind me adding a few thoughts. That which is observable to the five senses is heavily emphasized by the old law (bearing false witness, adultry, murder, worshipping idols, showing disrespect to parents, stealing, etc) whereas that which is internally experienced is emphasized by the higher law of Jesus Christ (anger control, not lusting, loving one's neighbor, control of thoughts, etc) Not controlling these internal motives/emotions tends to destroy one's spiritual sensitivity, therefore it sins against the body. HATRED, ENVY, JEALOUSY, LUST, GREED, PRIDE, etc, all affect the body in subtle but nevertheless important ways, but all have the net effect of diminishing one's sensitivity to the spirit of the Holy Ghost. Some persons I have known are apparently so hardened they can wave other people's sacred clothing in public, blow their nose in it, etc. People who do that show themselves clearly to be in the bonds of sin, according to the standards of the higher law, although it might be difficult to show that they had broken a more observable law according to the old code. As the saying goes, as a man thinketh, so is he. ---------- "Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer every man."
