As far as "not always accurately representing their position as Mormons."as DaveM stated in a post to Judy & Dean. I am not trying to state their position. I am stating the OFFICIAL General Authority Position. This is the ONLY position. According to LDS prophets they are the only ones allowed to state LDS doctrine. Any member that exercises his "FREE AGENCY" is out of order and can even be in jepoady of being eXcommunicated, if he steps on the wrong toes. Or if he is in a public light, spouting "his position". Do you know how many LDS have been eXed for their "positions"? I sent  quotes to the effect of "when the prophet speaks the THING has been done" This does also not take into account the fact that it is extremely easy for LDS to say one thing & believe another. Happens all the time. I believe DaveH was doing some of that, he understands Official doctrine. Since the leaders have had a history of misleading why not the members?  There are references to official approval of misleading potential converts with "milk"  The whole set of missionary lessons misrepresent official church doctrine, which is imparted after they set the hook. I agree with Brigham They have the "smoothest Liars in the world"!
DAVEH:  Below is a very interesting quote, Kevin.  Thanx for sharing it with us.   Kinda gives you an idea of the what a strong character BY was, eh!  Nothing wishy-washy about his sermons!  From my perspective, BY was the right man for the right job (moving the Church to Utah), and it is evident that he was not easily dissuaded from his goals.  That is why I think a lot of LDS folks revered him......and also why some non LDS folks were fearful of him.

"I have many a time on this stand dared the world to produce as mean devils as we can. We can beat them at anything. We have the greatest and smoothest liars in the world; the cunningest and most adroit thieves, and any other shade of character you can mention. We can pick out elders in Israel right here who can beat the world at gambling, who can handle cards, cut and shuffle them with the smartest rogues on the face of God's footstool. I can produce elders here who can shave the smartest shavers, and take their money from them. We can beat the world at any game. We can beat them because we have men here that live in the light of the Lord, that have the holy priesthood, and hold the keys of the Kingdom of God. But you may go through the sectarian world, and you cannot find a man capable of opening the door of the Kingdom of God to admit others in. We can do that. We can pray the best, preach the best, and sing the best. We are the best looking and finest set of people on the face of the earth; and they may begin any game they please, and we are on hand and can beat them at anything they have a mind to begin. They may make sharp their two-edged swords, and I will turn out the Elders of Israel with greased feathers and whip them to death.
