The leadership who rejected Yeshua were the leadership with the most to lose. The Sadducee leadership (especially in the Temple) were heavily influenced by Hellenization (even though the Jewish people celebrate Chanukah as a celebration against the Hellenizers -- try to understand THAT one) and were granted power by the Roman overlords. A Messiah who would be king threatens this position*. Therefore, they looked for any reason to kill the threat.
The Sadducees accepted only Torah as authoritative, and in spite of what Christians say about the life and teaching of Yeshua, the Sadducees were unable to use his "abandonment of Torah" against him in his trial**. Instead, they used his repeated declarations of being God against Him.

* Sadducees were deists from my limited understanding, so they had no real reason to strive for holiness and righteousness.
** Think about that... Had Yeshua broken the Shabbat or abandoned the Kosher Laws, they would have used that against him in the trial. His trial proves his impeccable Torah Observance. Are you paying attention, Terry :)  ?

In spite of the belief that the Messiah would be Divine, the Jewish leadership of the times did not accept that Jesus was this Christ.   Why?   Did they expect this ruler to be born or more noble stock or ????
