It is the use of derogatory terms such as ANTI
DAVEH: Wait Kevin.....why do you think ANTI is a derogatory term? I think you are trying to redefine terms. IMO, it simply is a descriptive term that denotes the proactive element that pertains to some who disagree and/or dislike Mormonism. I have anti-Mormon friends (may I add you to that list?) with whom I disagree, but do not shun because of their vehemence against my beliefs. I have many more friends (and even employees) who strongly disagree with my beliefs, but don't go out of their way to denigrate and attempt to embarrass me for what I believe. I do not consider them to be anti-Mormon.
Anti-Mormon is a term coined by Mormons to describe the level of those who disagree with our beliefs. Yet it seems you (and maybe Perry) want to redefine the term to make it sound derogatory. I sincerely think you are doing yourself a disservice by doing that. Perhaps you believe it gives you a persecuted status....I don't know. If so, you bringing your own sorrows upon yourself, IMO. If there are LDS folks who try to denigrate you by calling you an anti-Mormon, I apologize for them. I sincerely believe they are in error for doing so. Personally though, I've not run into that attitude amongst the folks I associate.
that puts up a wall of division and apprehension.
DAVEH: Wow.......You would worry about that!!! Even if it were true, any division and apprehension it would cause would surely be minor compared to the division and apprehension some anti-Mormons create when they wave our underwear in public.
We are portrayed as a bunch of nuts in the LDS media.
DAVEH: Whew......step outside your world for a moment, Kevin. Just how do you think anybody (whether Mormon or not) perceives you when you are waving our sacred underwear in public? Are you any bit surprised that when you plan nuts, you harvest nuts? What could be nuttier than waving underwear in public?
I think that may be part of the intent of such language.
DAVEH: Except for perhaps a few nuts on our side, for which I've previously apologized......I respectfully disagree.
Then there are the false news stories etc.
DAVEH: I have a lot of experience with the press. I understand your frustration at having false things said in print. I would suggest it is the nature of the beast, and not to take it personally. I've been part of many articles about our shop. I can't think of a single one that wasn't in error in some significant way. One publication (PEOPLE) at our request reluctantly read (they refused to fax us a copy) us the article over the phone before going to print with it. Fortunately we caught a couple glaring errors, one of which was that we were located in Portland, Maine. To make such a mistake only underscores the lack of real understanding when composing such stories.
Now PEOPLE is somewhat a tabloid publication, and lack of editorial accuracy might be expected. But what do you think about the Wall Street Journal....would you not think they are about as conservatively accurate as one could possible expect? The author of a front page article about us a few years ago said that it was his goal to write and article that includes both the hells angels and bankers. After hanging around the shop for 3 days, he went back to Chicago to write the article. A couple weeks later he called to say he was done with it and then read it to me. Sounded good to me. A few days later he called back with the bad news.....it was not controversial enough. His editor would not run it as written, but wanted some dirt. He called to ask me if we had ever been sued or had customers mad at us. LOL.......wow, what a predicament! We are rather noted for being a nice company to do business with. The best he could do is come up with a guy who was mad that he had to wait 9 months for delivery on a jacket. And....the article was rewritten to reflect this bit of negativity.
So Kevin......my advise to you is to quit worrying about what the press says. They've got their agenda, and their job is to sell advertising space.....not to be accurate in their reporting, despite their official stance.
