If you want to argue the merits of one technological choice over the
other, you need to get more specific than "look at that great site
built with turbine". For example, Microsoft has an excellent
website. It is well laid out, extremely responsive, and it uses ASP.
So ASP is the obvious choice, right?
I suggest make time/money estimates for all milestones of your
development process. For example, time to develop session management
in Turbine (about 0 hours) versus time to develop it in ASP (who
knows?). DB access. Page templating. Event scheduling. And so on.
Be honest and don't slant the results, or you will lose credibility
(and you'll never get it back).
After you're finished these quantitative estimates, you can move into
fuzzier areas. For example, it's easier to maintain page templates
than pages with embedded code (ugh). It's easier to track down bugs
when you have source code. You get quicker support from the Turbine
mailing list than from Microsoft. And so on.
Then take your presentation to your boss. Afterwards, if he can't
counter the specifics, he doesn't have a leg to stand on. Tell him if
he chooses to ignore your technical recommendations without explaining
why, then you will go over his head and explain to HIS boss why you
disagree. Provide his boss a SUMMARY of your report and emphasize
that you are a team player, but you have concerns. Now your butt is
covered when the excrement hits the fan, and you may soon find
yourself in an upwardly mobile position.
One last thing: make sure that all your presentations are conducted in
a friendly, non-adversarial manner. You are arguing facts, not
debating religion. Keep your personal feelings out of it.
Yeah, I know this is waaaaay off topic. Sorry.
Travis
P.S. Anyone know how much money MS spends on their site? Must be
horrific.
