But the RunDataFactory is hard-coded to return only a RunData object - you
cannot ask it for subclass of it... Do I misunderstand the RunDataFactory or
am I missing some kind of configuration?

There is no "RunData" issue as you can define your own RunData object and
pass that in. That is why we created a RunDataFactory.
