The problem you have there is adding tags after something has been
posted. What if a new user doesn't realise that adding tags in the
subject line is the 'de facto' standard? That post is forever
untagged because changing the subject line effectively starts a new
post.

I really don't think that there's an all around solution to this due
to the different formats of the data. Some people read it via mail
and some via the web and we're always going to have that mismatch of
data.

My idea (and it's very rough) would be to have an intermediary app
that either subscribes to the list itself or uses the new google
groups feeds to monitor the group. We could build our own term
extraction engine (a very grandiose name for something fairly simple -
although I will throw in the idea of using a soundex lib to help get
around spelling mistakes) to pull out known tokens from each message
(i.e. turbogears, cherrypy, identity, genshi, kid, etc, etc) and have
the application tag each message/thread automatically.

This could then be an ideal front end to help users search for exactly
what they're looking for on the list. Users who may not know all the
best terms to search by can filter messages using the terms we've
constructed.

It can also have a password protected front end for list monitors to
create summaries easily - it will have all the messages since the last
summary, and could be ordered by activity, weighted by who has replied
(i.e. possibly give TG developers and people who are known to answer
questions concisely, correctly and frequently) and, of course, filter
by tags.

As you can see, I've obviously got quite excited about the prospect of
this project, however, I have no time to implement it at the moment :(
