I'm beginning to believe that because I only watch in SD, I get the
4:3 versions usually, whereas if I had an HD set-up I'd get it in
widescreen. I know that's the usual state of play in the US, but in
the UK the two are not necessarily related.

Anyway, I believe it's widescreen from here on in.
