Well my widescreen television is approximately 13 years old, and there
was widescreen programming prior to that. And this was before digital,
HD or anything else. So yes, we've had widescreen for a long time.
There was also an awkward 14:9 phase which you'll find a number of
costume dramas were made in.

But NFL really is the odd one out. We get widescreen US tennis all the
time, and NASCAR. Must admit that I've not seen NBA widescreen over
here, nor baseball, although both of those are largely confined to a
channel I don't get (NASN - now owned by ESPN).
