I had never heard of Brown until the news about his beating up the
umbrella girl came out, and I still don't know what songs he sings. As
a father of daughters around her age, my inclination would pretty much
be to kick his ass if I actually saw him, rather than dance to his
grooves. It did give me another chance to emphasize to my young son
that we don't hit girls, for any reason.

I grew up, almost literally, with Michael Jackson, and my sister was
one of his original groupies back in the 5 days. I am not (too)
ashamed to admit that I own many of his songs, but they are not
complex or sophisticated. And if one of those judges ever again say
that no one can sing a classic like "Beat it!" like the master I may
throw a shoe through my (non HD) TV.

Your points about MJ and the new judge do get to the heart of this
show, and as I slowly accept it I find I am able to almost enjoy it.
Even though they sometimes say silly things like "this is a singing
competition", the show is about selling songs (however those get sold
these days). They are not looking for the best vocalist, or the most
soulful or artistic singing artist, they are looking for someone who
will sell lots of records. If derivatives of Amy Winehouse or John
Mayer or Michael Jackson sell songs, then that is what they look for.
I have no idea of any of the judges really know that business, but
probably they all do (who on the planet has sold more records with
less talent than Paula Abdul?). As long as I remember that, then the
show is actually pretty interesting. For instance, the judges all went
crazy over that guy yesterday (dark hair, kind of tortured, they said
he was from San Diego and had been trying to get into the music biz on
his own for a few years). I had him rated in the middle of the pack of
the evening's performances. The first year I watched the show I would
have been irritated with the judge's reaction and been trying to get
out of my obligation to keep watching it. Now I just shrug and say "I
guess the judges know what sells better than I do - that's
interesting".

My favorite part of the show last night was when Simon was berating
one of the singers, who said something like "I was just trying to be a
little artistic" and Simon quickly shot back with something lik
e"being artistic is great - just not on this show". Paula scolded him,
but I thought "yes, exactly". The show knows what it is about, it has
just taken me a while to catch up.
