Because it was a joke. Nobody seriously believes blondes or Pollacks are any more stupid than anyone else, but people still tell blond and Polish jokes. Nobody seriously believes Madonna has slept with the entire roster of the NBA, NFL, and MLB, but people still make jokes about it. I didn't say the joke was OK or not OK. I do say that you can either understand that it is just a joke, or truly be the butt of it. At this moment, Sarah Palin is a big butt. And I don't get Palin's motivation to keep pressing the issue. She won't go far in politics playing the pity-card. Being known as the candidate-who-holds-a-grudge didn't help her win the vice-presidency, and it isn't helping her now. Her reputation is only becoming more tarnished by her refusal to drop the matter and move on with her life. Judging from Letterman's ratings this week (he has surpassed Conan and increased his typical viewership), he has not been hurt by the so-called negative publicity. -- Kevin M.
