The copy protection on standard def video content is located in the
vertical blanking interval, the same place vchip data and closed
captioning data is located. One can buy a proc amp with the ability
to delete lines of video on a line by line basis to get by the copy
protection. That device will run you 3 grand.

VHS? what is VHS?

As far as the original question, no...there are no 'magic' signals
running in a DVR coax. I have not heard of this problem specifically,
but will run under the assumption it is a new energy-star compliant
'feature' that was added with the new software. My guess is the
previous poster was correct in that is activates the activity of the
DVR when it senses activity...likely through the IR remote sensor.
Even though the DVR will not respond to the TV's remote commands, it
does see them there. So when you turn on the set, that IR pulse from
the TV remote lets the DVR know the king is in his domain.
