March 5, 1952: A young Oprah Winfrey interviews Senator Joseph McCarthy for the Chicago Defender. McCarthy first announces his implication that the Voice of America was being infiltrated by Communists. Winfrey does not challenge any of the accusations made my McCarthy, instead turning the interview towards McCarthy's now-legendary love of buttermilk pancakes with honey butter and his appreciation for his vacation cottage in Vernon County, southwest of LaCrosse. Winfrey ends the interview by thanking him for his "tireless effort on the front lines of the Red Menace."
