My argument has always been that it is more than just one thing, that
it was a collection of reasons for Conan receiving weak numbers. And
though some of the reasons can theoretically be blamed on people not
finding Conan entertaining, there were other factors at play, and one
of them was the poor lead-in. Another was the lack of a transition
between Jay to Conan (compare it to the transition from Johnny to Jay,
and how much time Jay had to groom the 11:35 audience prior to
actually being given The Tonight Show). Add to that the idea that fans
of Leno were essentially told they didn't need to watch Conan, because
Leno would still have his own nightly series. That all means that
Leno's audience was essentially NOT to become Conan's audience. So,
when you think about it, a fair way to look at ratings would be to
compare Conan's 12:35 ratings to his 11:35 ratings, because any
increase would almost have to be brand new viewers for NBC at that
time period. And the new viewers seemed to be an increase in the key
demo, and Leno hadn't been able to add much to that age range despite
being "The King of Late Night."
