Almost all of the challenges have a time penalty if you don't do them (usually 2 hours). I bet they spent more time there than the penalty would have been. It's really a wash.
They are already going to be way behind AND have to do the special task for those saved by a non-elimination, so there's only a small chance they'll make it through the next round. I haven't done a count, but my gut feeling is that only about 1/3 of the time does the team saved by a non-elimination make it through the next round. A lot of it depends upon if there is some task that gets everyone caught up and how far behind that last place team was to begin with.
