It served a purpose - perhaps they thought that, instead of doing an
original joke putting down the city every night (as LN and LS had done for
the previous 19 years), it was time to open the show by mentioning how
great the city is. (And it saved them the hassle of having to write an
extra joke every night, too.) But yes, it was time to give it a rest.
I like the new line - it has a distinctly old-time broadcasting feel to it,
a la Walter Winchell's "Good evening, Mr. and Mrs. America from border to
border and coast to coast and all the ships at sea. Let's go to press."
