I thought the new open calls back to the opening and commercial intro/outro shots from the old "Late Night" days.

And that's a good thing...I like it.

I caught the new open last night. Dumping the CG skyline is a definite improvement, but I wish they hadn't replaced one piece of cheap-looking CG with the cheap-looking CG version of the Ed Sullivan Theater marquee. Also, there's something about the cityscape shots that felt very derivative of the open Leno has used since returning to 11:35, and it may just be nothing more than the film-look effect and the unmoving camera.

Not sure if this was brand new tonight or if was in use before Dave's recent vacation, but "Late Show" has finally ditched the crappy CGI open for actual footage of New York City and (what I thought was) a classy graphics package.

They also seem to have changed the shot list following the VTR:
1) reverse angle shot of audience (not sure if handheld or jib - possibly shot from Dave's desk riser)
2) catwalk shot angled down to shoot through the scrim during Dave's dash to stage left
3) over-the-shoulder on Paul as the scrim goes up and Dave makes his entrance
4) back to the reverse angle shot, now at (roughly) floor height, as Dave finds his mark
5) finally to the hard camera for the start of the monologue

This may not seem important, since neither is a MATERIAL change (there was still a Regis joke within the first 90sec of the monologue, for example), but both changes contribute to a fresh look for the show...or at least help it feel less dated.
