I sincerely doubt ANYONE expected the DOTD cinema event to somehow beat "Catching Fire" at the box office, so that's hardly a fair comparison.
I went to see Day of the Doctor at the AMC in Hamilton NJ. (I'd not been able to watch the special on Saturday on account of I GOT MARRIED, so this was my first viewing.) It was only showing on one screen, but it was one of the larger houses and it was FULL of Whovians of all ages. Lots of Sonic Screwdrivers being waved around during the preshow. As good as the episode was, the atmosphere made it that much more fun.
