Such is the life of actors. It's worth remembering that Tom Baker took this attitude previously. He might be back in the fold now, busily making audio stories, but he was never part of The Five Doctors, for example, because he didn't want to become involved.
And Paul McGann has been happily making audio stories too for many years now. Check out bigfinish.com for details of hundreds of these dramas now! When as an actor you accept a role like Doctor Who, it's sometimes hard to appreciate that you will be Doctor Who for the rest of your life, no matter how little or much you did. I think most actors accept that (and the benefits that come from forever having the convention circuit to fall back on should work dry up). It is curious that Eccleston continues to work in genre pieces like Heroes and Thor - both of which might continue to make him a fan favourite. On the other hand, he's the actor who perhaps least needed Doctor Who when he took the role - not that the careers of other recent Doctors had exactly hit the buffers.
