I thought it was a terrific mix of Who-ism and the sort of period broadcasting drama that was a significant element of "The Hour," which, by the way, was one of my favorite serialized programs in the past 5 years.
As for the Eccleston brouhaha, I thought Moffat and the DW production team did a great job of working around his diffidence/absence - and (Spoiler alert!) you can see his eyes and forehead start to appear (thanks to computer magic) as John Hurt's War Doctor regenerates. Not to mention some other Easter Eggy acknowledgement of the so-called 9th Doctor. DOTD itself? A definite treat - and a load of fun. Funny, clever, exciting and lots of subtle and satisfying fan service that didn't overwhelm or derail the project. I'll miss the charming and nimble Matt Smith, but, despite it being his swan-song, I'm looking forward to the Christmas special, and the passing of the torch to Peter Capaldi in the title role.
