In the Dave scenario, you are missing one other possibility: CBS changes ownership and/or Les Moonves is replaced. If Dave does not feel in harmony with his new bosses or faces major budget cuts, he might decide he would rather pack it in and let somebody else fight the good fight. To some extent, I think this is what happened with Jay. The drive to get Conan out of the 11:35 spot was tied to panic about ratings instability when GE was putting together the sale of NBC to Comcast. And when the new succession plan was announced last year, Jay said that he was no longer dealing with old friends in the front office and that was one reason he was okay with going. As late night revenues are down, I believe NBC wants to do a cheaper Tonight Show and Fallon in a New York studio can do it better than Jay. -- -- TV or Not TV .... The Smartest (TV) People!
