There was a similar situation maybe 3 to 5 Olympics ago, I forget who was
ill or injured, and many were suggesting moving one of the hosts from other
day parts, and NBC explained that they were not going to do that, since
those shows were all planned out and prepared for. Moving one of them to
another day part would basically mean having two Olympic shows with
unprepared hosts, rather than just one. They preferred having an
experienced broadcaster who was not already plugged into a well prepared
part of the Olympic show.

And I see now that Lauer is back for tonight's show, which suggests that
Vierra was there to give him his regular weekend off.

Just to be clear, I have not been suggesting any kind of conspiracy by NBC
against Guthrie, or even that any of this should be read as a tea leaf
indicating her future with Today. Simply that this does demonstrate that
NBC does not regard Guthrie as one of their top broadcasters, not even as
valuable as a former Today Show host. Today has not been in that situation
for a long time (when its junior co-host was not seen as a major broadcast
property at the network).
