According to the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly, Oliver's show is going to be called "Last Week Tonight with John Oliver" and it premieres April 27 at 11PM. According to the description, "Oliver takes the helm of his own late-night comedy show, tackling the issues and jokes of the week that was."
So it sounds like it could have also been called "The Weekly Show". ----- Original Message ----- From: Mark Jeffries To: [email protected] Sent: Monday, February 17, 2014 2:02 PM Subject: Re: [TV orNotTV] Re: Jimmy Fallon Era Begins: Fallon Big Late Night Winner And you can add "@Midnight" to the LA list, although that show has a bias towards standups before anyone else. However, hipster chanteuse Neko Case was a panelist the other night and won the game, so anyone who is quick-witted theoretically can be booked on that show. Arsenio is also LA and as being scheduled exclusively in late-night should be counted. I'm assuming that John Oliver's show will be based in New York and although I haven't heard of an exact format, I would assume that there will be guests of some sort, either straight interview or panel. Consider what's in NYC aside from "Tonight" and "Late Show": - Late Night - SNL - TDS - Colbert - All three major network morning shows - Kelly & Michael - Major studio operations for all major cable news outlets - SXM (including Howard Stern) - Olbermann (for those sports-inclined night owls) Contrast that with what's left in LA, apart from Kimmel/Conan/Ferguson: - All varieties of televised entertainment "news" (ET, Access Hollywood, Extra, etc.) - E! - Ellen (and other LA-produced syndies) - Real Time I'm sure I'm leaving shows/outlets off both lists, but it seems to me like that trekking out to NY won't be viewed as a worthless trip from a PR perspective. And while I don't expect anything approaching a war, it will be interesting to see how the Late Show and Tonight share guests. -- -- TV or Not TV .... The Smartest (TV) People!
