It was probably referring to the numbers in the demo. Total views for CR is
about 1.5M, for TDS about 1.7M:

Fallon got 4.3M total viewers the week before Dave announced his
retirement, Dave got 2.9M (had to use the week before - Dave had gotten a
big ratings bounce since his retirement, no doubt short-lived).

Of course only the demo numbers really matter to the networks, but in real
people terms, Colbert is about to roughly double his audience.

It will be interesting to see what he does in the ratings once everything
evens out. Colbert is easily the most genuinely liberal person to be given
his own network television show since, well, I don't know when. I was going
to say Dick Cavett, but Cavett was not really what in my very politically
liberal home would have been called a real liberal - he was more of what we
would have called a cultural liberal. Colbert is a true blue liberal, much
more liberal than Jon Stewart. But he is also a talented and shrewd
performer, who certainly does not need to be political to be funny or
entertaining. He is not exactly in the midwest, aw shucks tradition, but I
think he is going to do well. And if the Fox News crowd starting agitating
against him, really, all the better.
