According to some recent Edison Research data they published, Conan's podcast was the #26 biggest podcast in the US in Q1 2022.
That means that it should be very profitable in advertising terms. The podcast industry broke $1bn in North America last year and is now projected to reach $4bn by 2024. This is first and foremost an ad inventory buy. Sirius gets to monetise all Team Coco's output alongside things like Office Ladies and Marc Maron. Being proprietary isn't necessarily the way to go if you've got great ad revenues. Who'd use a SiriusXM app to listen to podcasts ahead of a proper podcast app? Plus SiriusXM is US only, and they can monetise globally with ads. Most radio companies are pivoting to podcasts at least for part of their businesses, and the accompanying SiriusXM channel is just a nice-to-have. This is about podcast ad revenues.
