Think of this as the audio equivalent of when Seinfeld streaming rights were
bought by Netflix.  Limited term deal with some level of exclusivity.

All this Team Conan activity has me wondering, and I haven't been able to
figure this out online.  Team Coco and Conanco are separate entities?  More to
the point, is Conan still going to do that HBOMax program that was announced
for after his weeknight show ended?

I went back and read the original article now that you all have generously
provided context. Sirius is paying in the neighborhood of $150 million for the
Team Coco archives and an ongoing content deal for 5 more years. Conan will
also program a comedy channel for SiriusXM.
Even as an old guy I know how to stream music and podcasts from my phone to a
Bluetooth speaker. Sirius has to know that their whole satellite receiver
business is a stranded cost and their future is in streaming.

According to some recent Edison Research data they published, Conan's podcast
was the #26 biggest podcast in the US in Q1 2022.
That means that it should be very profitable in advertising terms. The podcast
industry broke $1bn in North America last year and is now projected to reach
$4bn by 2024. This is first and foremost an ad inventory buy. Sirius gets to
monetise all Team Coco's output alongside things like Office Ladies and Marc
Maron.
Being proprietary isn't necessarily the way to go if you've got great ad
revenues. Who'd use a SiriusXM app to listen to podcasts ahead of a proper
podcast app? Plus SiriusXM is US only, and they can monetise globally with ads.
Most radio companies are pivoting to podcasts at least for part of their
businesses, and the accompanying SiriusXM channel is just a nice-to-have. This
is about podcast ad revenues.

Biggest sticking point for me is that Sirius is not really a successful
company, is it? For them to spend money acquiring non-proprietary content seems
at the very least unprofitable. If they are hoping to expand the brand beyond
its own app/service, that further indicates to me that their offerings are
indeed failing.

My impression (from listening to “Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend”) is that
advertising sales and some production responsibilities for the Team Coco
podcasts have been handled by Earwolf, which was already owned by SiriusXM.

It could be what keeps the company from going under. I have no idea how the
company is currently structured but there could be people in roles like
acquiring sponsorships or selling ad time who have burned out. Being able to
turn these responsibilities over to Sirius could be the best option.
I like craft beer and follow the industry. Before the pandemic there was a wave
of buyouts of pioneering small breweries. As much as fans of a brewery would
express a sense of betrayal, the founders would inevitably put out a statement
talking about years of 16 hour days and twenty years of total commitment and
how this was the best way for them to step aside without shutting down the
business.

Hardly anything will change, unless you include the Coco-branded channel he'll
