Dolby Digital (AC-3) is Dolby's third generation audio coding algorithm. The audio is part of the digital data stream. You need a receiver that contains hardware and firmware for decoding this Codec. If your receiver does not contain the needed hardware and software it will not be able to pull the audio from the stream. I have not seen a receiver that has an audio output that can be routed to an external decoder. I may be wrong, but I don't believe they exist. Some receivers that can decode AC3 have optical outputs to allow for external decoding of the audio signal, but it is already decoded from AC3 format and has been pulled from the stream. S/PDIF is not the same as AC3 as far as I am aware. S/PDIF is a digital audio format for interconnecting audio devices. Your best bet is to buy a receiver that says AC3. I think you said you had a Coship receiver. I had a Coship receiver and had the same problem. The Pansat receivers have the AC3 chips and firmware. They also have the S/PDIF output. If it were me I would buy the 3500. I've looked at them and they seem to be a good value, good support, easy to program, easy to make out and understand. There are a lot of choices out there. The good news is that even the older receivers like Coship have value and can fetch a good price on auction. Good Luck! If anyone has corrections to any of this info, please post.
