A number of sites have done this.  It can be done, it can be done transparently, and 
it can be done "live".
The only third party software you'll need is an ODBC driver for the "SQL database".

You can create UniVerse BASIC subroutines that use BCI functions to effect the updates 
(or inserts, or calls to stored procedures).  If you create these as trigger 
subroutines, you can have them operate automatically when the UniVerse file is updated.

Refer to the BASIC SQL Client Interface manual for details of the BCI functions (or 
type HELP BCI).
Refer to the UniVerse SQL Reference (chapter 5) for details on how to write trigger 
subroutines.
