I kept playing around with both vms (both with the 3.9.030900rc5-generic kernel) running pausing and restoring to verify the hangup. They were consistent. However, by accident I started flipping from full screen to half screen and found that the window got scrambled at first and then straightened out after a few flips. The window wasn't only straight, but all the normal functions were operating. I then was able to suspend and restore the windows without any hangups. To get the windows to stick again, you have to power down the vm, bring it back up and then suspend it. When you restore the suspended vm, it'll be hung up again. Flip it back and forth in screen size will unfreeze it until the next power down, up, suspend, up cycle. In my amateur opinion the hangup appears to be in the xorg-server's restart.
