FWIW I've attached /var/log/Xorg.0.* from a -160 versus a -157 boot, on
my Ryzen 9 + 6700XT (Navi GPU) system.

The -160 Xorg log contains the following errors warnings:
(EE) AMDGPU(0): failed to set mode: Invalid argument
(WW) AMDGPU(0): Failed to set mode on CRTC 0
(EE) AMDGPU(0): Failed to enable any CRTC

which do not appear in the -157 Xorg log. I'm assuming the above
indicates trouble but no idea how to analyze the issue further as I
don't know what Xorg display was expecting from the amdgpu GPU driver.
(Anyhow as the commit linked to amdgpu has been provided above and looks
to be in the right spot, I guess if I could build a custom kernel I
would do so with that commit backed out and try booting again.)

As I gather some others have done here, I attempted to compare dmesg
outputs from -157 boot versus -160 (I used dmesg | grep -i -e amdgpu -e
vga > ~/5p15.0-160_dmesg.log to capture the output during a
"blackscreen" boot of -160 kernel) but didn't see any console output
difference in the -160 dmesg output. The only difference I could spot
was the -160 kernel loads amdgpu driver about 1 full second earlier than
the -157 kernel. I spot-checked over 3 boots but that's probably not
statistically significant sample to really check for an underlying race
condition making trouble.

anyways if apport-collect or another test would further this cause,
please let me know. I'm looking forward to the next kernel bump past
this issue. thanks!
