Thanks Thomas, that's pretty much what I suspected. Although we should note that William's experience where MUTTER_DEBUG_DISABLE_HW_CURSORS=1 doesn't help suggests there are other bugs with similar symptoms. That's a common problem in bugs with many subscribers. Ideally we should get the original reporter to confirm what works and what doesn't and then anyone like William with a different experience should open new bugs.
I still think your findings could turn into a patch for Mutter 46.x because we want Ubuntu 24.04 to be resilient against commit failures with EACCES. It should recover and not freeze. Since it sounds like later versions of Mutter do have this bug solved already then the solution most likely to be accepted for Ubuntu 24.04 and Mutter 46.x would be to find the upstream commits that already fixed it and backport those.
