Sometimes you get lucky and an upstream fix is simple but I agree that a
stable branch should get a smaller, simpler patch.

I wonder if generalising the patch to survive EACCES, not just at
startup, could make sense and simplify the fix?

Also can you confirm if MUTTER_DEBUG_FORCE_KMS_MODE=simple also avoids
the bug? That will turn off atomic KMS and allow cursor updates to
pass/fail independently from the rest of the screen.
