As a script stopgap, this works in 6.7:

It's certainly improved since early versions, but it's not perfect: with
Slack set to Autostart on login, open and tile 8 threads across multiple
screens positioned by topic, log out and back in, and enjoy the centered
cascading fun if Slack app beats the script to init by a few ms.

Race conditions like that likely wouldn't be a problem with a native
implementation, but good luck getting every app developer on board,
particularly opaque corps.

Full disclosure that I'm still using X11 for VNC reasons, but that
script would make Wayland usable in most of my multi-window positioning
cases. We're close but no cigar yet.
