Every X11 based window manager on Unix (every variant... HP UX, AIX,
SunOS, BSD, etc) in the 1980s had this feature -- and it worked
everywhere.

As others have said on this bug report, X11 support should not go away
-- not ever.  Moreover, support for X11 should increase.
