It's not possible for atomic commits to fail with MUTTER_DEBUG_FORCE_KMS_MODE=simple because there are no atomic commits in that mode. So it sounds like the fundamental problem is waking up the dock, and when atomic KMS is enabled that just manifests as atomic commit failures.
Also "the MST display path" doesn't exist at the Mutter level.
