I removed gnome-control-center and gnome-remote-desktop and did an
autoremove (which removed an alarming (>300) packages. But didn't
uninstall mutter. Now the upgrade fails without even starting properly.
It then advised "Please install all available updates for your release
before upgrading." I did this and still get

"Calculating the changes

Could not determine the upgrade

An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade."

Report includes message such as "Warning: W:Target Sources
(main/source/Sources) is configured multiple times in
/etc/apt/sources.list:6 and /etc/apt/sources.list:48, W:Target Sources
(universe/source/Sources) is configured multiple times in
/etc/apt/sources.list:17 and /etc/apt/sources.list:48, W:Target Sources
(restricted/source/Sources) is configured multiple times in
/etc/apt/sources.list:6 and /etc/apt/sources.list:48, W:Target Sources
(multiverse/source/Sources) is configured multiple times in
/etc/apt/sources.list:27 and /etc/apt/sources.list:48, W:Target Packages
(main/binary-amd64/"

and many more.
