I have a fair number of friends who use Ubuntu not Windows. This is
because I could help when they asked for it to be installed. I have a
number of friends also who have wanted to purchase a fully retail
Ubuntu (large display laptop). I could point them to a specialist
vendor, and they had a good experience with their purchase. Not that
there are many such vendors around (UK).

In the last two weeks, two other friends, each, somewhat
geographically distant from me, have specifically asked to buy a new
Ubuntu laptop and are having difficulty with this. They are surrounded
by a Windows mono-culture.

On a different direction: I recently contacted my local elected
representatives, urging them to consider free software such as Ubuntu
with one aim of economy, and other aims of greater freedom and
competition. The considered reply was that the matter I raised had
been referred to the existing IT professional. It went without saying
that the elected representatives, the people with the real power, did
not know anything about - computers.
Watch this space. (but dont hold your breath)
